How to check your PA refund status

  1. Go to myPATH.
  2. Sign in or use the guest refund status tool.
  3. Enter the requested taxpayer information.
  4. Review the current refund status (received, processing, approved, sent).

Check no more than once a week. The system doesn't update faster than that.

Typical PA refund timing

  • E-file + direct deposit: usually within a few weeks of acceptance.
  • E-file + paper check: typically several weeks.
  • Paper return + direct deposit: generally several weeks longer.
  • Paper return + paper check: often 8-12 weeks or more.

Common reasons for delays

The most common delay causes:

  • Identity verification request from PA.
  • Math or transposition errors.
  • Mismatch between W-2/1099 totals reported by employers vs the return.
  • Missing Schedule SP, missing supporting forms, or PA-40 lines left blank.
  • Amended returns under review.

Direct deposit vs paper check

Direct deposit is almost always faster and safer. Verify routing and account numbers carefully before submitting. If you enter a wrong account, PA may not be able to recover the funds.

Amended PA returns

Use Form PA-40X to amend a previously filed PA-40. Include the corrected figures, an explanation, and any supporting documents.

An amended return typically takes longer to process than the original. If the amended return increases your refund, expect several weeks of review. If it increases what you owe, pay promptly to avoid interest.

When refunds get offset

Pennsylvania may use your refund to pay other debts you owe, including:

  • Past-due PA tax (income, sales, employer withholding).
  • PA child support obligations.
  • Certain federal debts.

If your refund is offset, PA usually sends a notice. Contact the agency named in the notice for details.
